At the request of the Bayda Hospital General Manager, Saleh Abu Nawara, the Libyan Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS), and its partner NORMECA, conducted a comprehensive needs assessment for the Al Bayda Hospital.
There were two main focus areas for this assessment. The first was the structural and sanitary state of the hospital and the second was the need for equipment, medicine, doctors and nurses to treat patients and train current staff.
The structural and sanitary conditions of the hospital were found to be in state of extensive disrepair requiring a large construction project, executed by a local contracting company, to bring the hospital up to acceptable standards. LIAS also found that the hospital was in great need of equipment and medicine. Equipment needs range from beds and furniture to specialized items used during surgery.
Currently LIAS is working with local donors and international NGOs to obtain funding for this work to be completed. It is estimated that structural and sanitary work can begin in February 2015.
