Conference on Social Cohesion in Libya – Tunis

Ambassador Aref Nayed, chairman of the Libya Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS), attended a session at the symposium organized by ACTED Civil Initiatives Libya (CIL) in cooperation with the University of Benghazi, the Histoire des Économies et des Sociétés Mediterranéennes, and the Faculty of Humanities at Tunis on the theme of the “Social Cohesion in Libya and Elsewhere” on Friday, 6th May 2016 at the Maison Blanche Hotel in Tunis. The conference brought together Libyan and Tunisian academics and researchers to share key social, academic and political developments in the two countries.Ambassador Nayed made a short intervention at the symposium and stressed the role that the tribal social fabric in Libya plays in the reconciliation process, and he also discussed the differences in the Tunisian and Libyan revolutions and what factors interrupted the transition to democracy in post-revolution Libya.

Ambassador Nayed also met with Professor Najib Hassadi, Dr Zahi Moghaibi, Dr Amal Obeidi from the University of Benghazi and other Libyan academics at the symposium.

Besides, the Team of the Libya Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS), headed by Ambassador Aref Nayed, conducted a series of discussions and consultations in Tunis regarding the latest developments and challenges in Libya with the Ambassadors of the USA, France, UK, Canada, the EU, the Italian Charge d’Affaire to Libya, and the UNSMIL Political Division team: Ambassador Peter Bodde, Ambassador Antoine Sivan, Ambassador Peter Millet, Ambassador David Sproule, Ambassador Nataliya Apostolova, and Ms Andreina Marsella.
